Location: Deadvlei, Namibia
About: Determined to come away with something different from Deadvlei, I dragged myself out of bed long before the sun rose. Still rubbing sleep from my eyes, I grabbed my bag and picked my way cautiously across the scrub to the car. I startled at every alien sound, half certain that a wild animal would emerge from the inky black. Heart racing, I shut the car door against the unknown. The beams of my headlights cut through the darkness, lighting the bitumen ahead until, finally, the road gave way to sand. Through the dark I drove, praying that I wouldn’t be yet another victim of Sossusvlei’s sandy trap. I pulled up at the end of the track triumphant, racing the fast approaching dawn, and headed into the pan. There, the stark white of the pan lit by nothing but stars, a lone skeleton directs my gaze to the skies, where the galaxy spirals eternally through the night.
