Title: Desert Roots
Location: Sossusvlei, Namibia
About: I love seeing the ways that patterns in nature repeat themselves in unexpected places. The deep groves in the pan of the Vlei here represent ancient rivers that would once have carved through the landscape. It seems almost unimaginable now that the enormous expanse of desert in Namibia would have regularly flooded enough to support fields of acacia trees. These jagged fingers remind me of tree roots, pushing down into the earth in search of life-giving nourishment. Namibia has experience some of the worst droughts and driest years on record in recent times, a stark reminder of the very real consequences of a changing climate around the world.
