Title: Close Encounter
Location: South Africa
About: We were sitting in our jeep, tracking a bull elephant for research purposes when we heard a rustling in the bushes to our left. You could sense the collective breath hold as a herd of elephants slowly emerged from the bush beside us, grazing on the scrub around us and totally unbothered by our presence. For twenty minutes we sat there, an oddly shaped addition to the graceful giants, marvelling at the size and and gentle aura that the elephants bring. One of the longest lived animals on the planet, I think you can sense their wisdom when you look in their eyes. Elephants follow the same pathways for their whole lives, so human encroachment on their territory can disrupt generations of migrations. Taking down fences and barriers to their travels is just one of the many important actions that conservation agencies like Elephants Alive, who we were hosted by, undertake. Imagine losing elephants, and never being able to see an incredible sight like this again. Learning about, and adapting to, the many challenges that come when humans and animals coexist in the same spaces is one of the most important aspects of conservation work today.
